Using efficient numerical methods in large-scale air pollution modelling

چکیده
The air pollution, and especially the reduction of the air pollution to some acceptable levels, is an important environmental problem, which will become even more important in the next two-three decades. This problem can successfully be studied only when high-resolution comprehensive models are developed and used on a routinely basis. However, such models are very time-consuming, also when modern high-speed computers are available. Indeed, if an air pollution model is to be applied on a large space domain by using fine grids, then its discretization will always lead to huge computational problems. Assume, for example, that the space domain is discretized by using a (288x288) grid and that the number of chemical species studied by the model is 35. Then ODE systems containing 2903040 equations have to be treated at every time-step (the number of time-steps being typically several thousand). If a three-dimensional version of the air pollution model is to be used, then the number of equations must be multiplied by the number of layers. The treatment of large air pollution models on modern parallel computers by using efficient numerical algorithms will be discussed in this

Modelling photochemistry in alpine valleys
Road traffic is a serious problem in the Chamonix Valley, France: traffic, noise and above all air pollution worry the inhabitants. The big fire in the Mont-Blanc tunnel made it possible, in the framework of the POVA project (POllution in Alpine Valleys), to undertake measurement campaigns with and without heavy-vehicle traffic through the Chamonix and Maurienne valleys, towards Italy (before a...
متن کاملOn the Efficient Treatment of Vertical Mixing and Chemistry in Air Pollution Modelling
Reaction-Advection-Diffusion problems occurring in Air Pollution Models have very stiff reaction terms and moderately stiff vertical mixing (diffusion and cloud transport) terms which both should be integrated implicitly in time. Standard implicit time stepping is by far too expensive for this type of problems whereas widely used splitting techniques may lead to unacceptably large errors for fa...
متن کاملParallel Computations in a Large-Scale Air Pollution Model
Large-scale air pollution models, which are normally described mathematically as systems of partial differential equations, must very often be run efficiently on high-speed computer architectures. The requirement for efficiency is especially important when some fine discretization of the spatial domain is to be applied. In practice, this means that an efficient implementation of such a model on...
متن کاملNumerical Modelling for Studying the Impact of Urban Air Pollution in Natural Reserves around Setúbal City
Numerical modelling was used to study the impact of urban air pollution from Setúbal City in two important natural reserves. Setúbal is a city in the middle south Portugal with a large resident population, important industry and intense traffic activities. There is an important harbour, which is responsible for intense heavy vehicle traffic. Setúbal is surrounded by two natural reserves, a moun...
